United Kingdom Eilean Donan Castle
Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie was built around 1220 as a defense against Viking raids. The first traces of settlement date back to the late 7th century. The MacKenzies clan is documented as lords of the castle from 1266 onward. In 1497, the MacKenzies were outlawed by the Crown. Eilean Donan Castle was besieged and captured. The castle was granted to the MacRae clan in 1511. During the English Civil Wars in the mid-17th century, a popular uprising prevented the Scottish Parliament from occupying the castle. During the first Jacobite rising in 1719, the castle was captured by the Royal Navy and blown up with 300 barrels of gunpowder.
In 1912, a descendant of the MacRaes purchased the castle and restored it largely to its original appearance between 1920 and 1930. The castle has housed a museum since 1955. Eilean Donan Castle is now open to the public for visits.
