The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, approximately 2km offshore and 5km north-east of North Berwick. This steep-sided volcanic rock is home to a large colony of Northern gannets. When viewed from the mainland during the breeding season, large areas of the surface of Bass Rock appear white due to the sheer number of birds (and their droppings). Bass Rock gave the Northern gannet its scientific name, Morus Bassanus.

Photography Tips

When you take pictures from a RIB as I did, it's rather difficult to get sharp pictures due to "boatshake"...

Travel Information

Very often getting ashore is impossible due to weather conditions and too heavy sea.
