USA Awa'awapuhi Trail

This photo was taken on the Awa'awapuhi Trail. The trail is located in northwest Kaui, Hawaii (the Napali Coast). This photo was taken in January of 2018, so the foliage is a little lusher. Also, I would like to stress this is the approximate location of the photo. The photo was taken about halfway through the trail.

When hiking on the Awa'awapuhi trail you will find many breath-taking views of the Napali coastline. I would highly recommend to bring a very wide angle lens and a CPL filter. Most photographs will be taken in the middle of the day. Attempting to hike the trail in the dark for sunrise/sunset photos will likely result in one falling ~1000m to their death. To reach the beginning of the Awa'awapuhi Trail take Highway 50 to the small town of Waimea. Then turn north on 550 and follow it for ~17 miles. The parking lot will be on your left.

The trail is ~3 miles out and ~3 miles back. There exist many nice views along the trail, but the real treat is the view at the end of the trail. I plan to post another photo of that location.

From start to finish you will drop ~1700 feet / ~520m in elevation. So then on the way back, you will be hiking uphill the entire trail. Make sure to bring plenty of water and a snack. As I mentioned above, many areas of the trail can be dangerous with steep/sharp drop-offs. Exercise caution when exploring this area of Kauai. It would be wise to avoid the trail during / immediately after rainfall.
