USA Lower South Desert Overlook
Expansive view of sandstone and mudstone monoliths in the less visited Cathedral Valley area of Capitol Reef National Park. Chances are you’ll have this spot all to yourself.
Photography Tips
Both wide angle and telephoto lens are useful here. The Fremont river ford is a bit intimidating but the water is typically just 6-8 inches deep and the river bottom is solid. Much easier than it initially appears but a high clearance vehicle would be best. There are amazing photo opportunities as you drive through the bentonite hills enroute to the overlook as well.
Travel Information
To reach this short hike, drive to mile marker 91 on Utah Highway 24, where the unpaved Hartnet Road begins. Cross the river ford, then continue 13 miles northwest, through the Bentonite Hills area, to a signed turnoff for Lower South Desert. Follow the spur road for 1.1 miles to the parking area at the trailhead. Fording the Fremont river can be avoided by starting the scenic loop drive from Caineville Wash Road several miles East on Hwy. 24 but it adds several hours to the drive and would require back tracking.
