USA Crazy Quilt Mesa

The less explored east side of Zion National Park is an endless maze of canyons, washes, and vast expanses of colorful taffy textured sandstone that is my favorite playground in Zion and makes for some interesting night photography compositions.

From the Zion National Park east entrance, drive west for about 1 mile (1.6 km) to a pullout on the right. Park and walk east along the road for about 100 meters to a point where you can easily drop into a sandy wash on the north side of the road. Make your way up a narrow sandstone ridge about 150 meters to a small cluster of hoodoos. The road is narrow with no shoulder and has steep slopes on both sides of the road. One must exercise extreme caution when walking on it during the day. It’s obviously even more precarious at night.
