USA Wahweap Hoodoos

Soft entrada sandstone bedrock in various shades of grey, light brown, very pale green or pure white in color and forms hoodoos ranging in shape from broad and short to tall, slender and tapering, topped either by dark sandstone blocks or unusual boulders of purple conglomerate, composed of small pebbles bonded together. It’s about a 4.5 miles (7.24 km) hike to the cluster that includes the iconic “White Ghost” hoodoo.

Photography Tips

This is a great spot for abstracts if you’re into that kind of thing (I am).

Travel Information

Head north on US 89 to Big Water, Utah. Go 0.6 miles (.96 km) to a "T" and turn left onto K7100. Go 2.5 miles (4 km) to a corral (past the fish hatchery) and park. Hike north up Wahweap Creek. The first hoodoos start at about mile 3.6 (km 5.79). Watch for a lone juniper tree on the left and head toward the hoodoos. There are 3 "coves" of hoodoos and of course the most famous is the last one you get to.

Lack of foresight on my part. The hoodoos and all the good stuff are on the left side of the wash and are easy to spot. The wash is very wide (100 yards/meters or more at various places. I knew it was several miles before I’d get to the hoodoos so looking as far as I could see, I tried to take the most direct route until I got to the first group of hoodoos. Then basically followed the edge of the wash until the cluster including the “White Ghost” came into view. Beyond that cluster the wash becomes less interesting.
