USA View of Mt. Rushmore through Scovel Johnson Tunnel
Look closely through the tunnel. This tunnel was engineered to give the traveler their first glimpse of Mount Rushmore as they travel the Iron Mountain Road to the national monument. The tunnel is named after Scovel Johnson, who built the Needles Highway and surveyed Iron Mountain Road.
Photography Tips
Stop in the pull-off, just before the tunnel, as you are driving toward Mount Rushmore. Walk across the road and up the shallow embankment, to line up the shot through the tunnel and toward Mount Rushmore.
