USA Zion National Park Switchbacks
A series of switchbacks winds up from the canyon floor at Canyon Junction, passing a couple of trailheads and The Great Arch (actually an alcove) and eventually leading to the 1.1 mile (1.8km) Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel hundreds of feet above the floor of the canyon. The route leads to the less visited but spectacular east end of Zion National Park. There is room to pull over and enjoy the view at multiple spots as you wind your way upward.
Photography Tips
Early morning and late afternoon light is best.
Travel Information
A Zion National Park pass is required to access this road. Due to the relatively narrow width and height of the tunnel which was completed in 1930, there are restrictions on large vehicles and RVs that may drive through the tunnel. Larger vehicles must pay an escort fee. Check with park officials before starting up the switchbacks. It is difficult or impossible for large RVs to turn around beyond Canyon Junction.
