Dramatic Overlook named for the vast area of red, orange, and purple badlands (bentonite) and is also located on the Skyline Rim above Utah’s Mars Desert Research Station.

Photography Tips

I wasn’t there for sunset but have seen some very nice sunset shots.

Travel Information

From Hanksville, Utah drive west 11 miles (17.7 Km) on Hwy. 24 to Coal Mine Road. From highway 24, drive 6.1 miles north on Coal Mine Road, then turn right and drive 3 miles to the overlook. I’m not certain camping is permitted there but when I was there in March 2021, there were several RVs parked near the rim. There are no facilities but ample room to park. There are no walls or barriers near the rim. One could easily drive off the edge (not advisable. Certain death).
