USA The Grotto
The Grotto Trailhead in Zion National Park is where one of top ranked hikes in the U.S., Angel’s Landing, begins. This bridge over the Virgin River is just a few yards from the “Grotto” parking area. Winter is my favorite time to visit Zion. It’s the only time you’ll have an opportunity to avoid the throngs of visitors to the park.
Photography Tips
I live about 20 minutes from Zion, so I visit fairly frequently. In years past, the highway leading to Zion (SR9) was a sleepy rural road. Now, from my home I can see a constant stream of traffic on the highway from before sunrise till 10 PM. So winter is my favorite time to visit, particularly after a snowfall. If you get there early (like before sunrise or just before sunset, you can experience the solitude that used to be common there.
Travel Information
For a few weeks in January and February, you’re allowed to drive your personal vehicle to the “Grotto” parking lot in Zion Canyon. Otherwise, board the free shuttle at the visitor center or any other shuttle stop and exit at the Grotto.
