USA Smith Rock State Park
Said to be the birthplace of modern rock climbing in the USA this is a must for climbers. However, it also offers some very nice composures for photographers with impressive rock structures and the shape of the Crooked River down below.
Photography Tips
This is a crowded spot with tourists and climbers so arrive early. I shot both sunrise and sunset and preferred the former though I have seen nice photos in the evening if there is a nice sunset. Coming in the morning will avoid the crowds and you'll be alone. In addition, the autumn is less crowded though there is a nice wild flower show in the spring which is worth researching the timing of.
Travel Information
North of Redmond in central Oregon you will drive on Highway 97 and look for the right hand turn (east) in Terrebone. Follow the signs to Smith Rock. This classical postcard shot is taken from the Rim Rock trail which is just west of the parking area. You will need to pay $5 for a day pass. I also hiked the Canyon trail for some nice shots and for the fit you can hike the Misery Ridge trail to climb to the top of the rock massif for a helicopter view of the park.
