USA Monument Valley Tribal Park
Iconic desert landscape located in the western United States. There’s a reason dozens of movies, short films, and commercials have been filmed within the boundaries of the park. The landscape is spectacular. There are only a couple of hikes that are permitted without a guide but the 17 mile loop road is open to the public (after paying the entrance fee) and includes many iconic views of the park.
Photography Tips
Simply driving the scenic loop will afford many opportunities for photography. There are numerous pullouts and parking areas along the route. On my most recent trip I decided to take a guided tour that traveled to places in the park that aren’t open to the public and it was worth every penny. The Navajo guide was native to the area and was very friendly, knowledgeable, and suggested various compositions that the casual observer would overlook. There are a half dozen or so outfits that offer tours. I was very pleased with the company I chose but if you’re interested in a guided tour, I suggest doing a bit of research online. I should emphasize that while I felt the guided tour was great, the self guided drive of the 17 mile loop is also wonderful and is highly recommended even if you decide to take a guided tour. Both options offer very different perspectives and locations.
Travel Information
While Monument Valley straddles the borders of Utah and Arizona, the “Tribal Park” is in Arizona. The visitor center and vicinity includes a large parking area, lodging, a restaurant, souvenir shop, restrooms, and great views overlooking some of the iconic buttes of the valley. There is an entrance fee of $8 (U.S.) per person. The self guided 17 mile driving tour is open from 6:30 AM to 5 PM during peak season. The Navajo tribe has been hit particularly hard by Covid. Therefore, as of May, 2022 tribal officials still require that masks be worn in all areas in the park. The valley is considered a sacred place by the Navajo people. Respect their culture and travel only where specifically permitted.
