USA Chena Lake Recreation Area
There are numerous locations that are recommended for photographing the Aurora Borealis within an hours drive from Fairbanks. Chena Lake is one of the few locations with water to add to the composition. There are numerous options for daytime water sports and swimming in the area.
Photography Tips
This is grizzly bear country, so be bear aware. Unfortunately (for photography), there were lights from road construction a mile or so from the lake in September 2023. Not enough light to ruin the dark sky but was a bit annoying. Highly recommend scouting your location during the day. On all three evenings at this location, temperatures near freezing and drifting fog was a constant battle. Make sure you check and wipe your lens before each shot.
Travel Information
From the Richardson Highway (Alaska Hwy.2), turn north on Buzby Road under the highway, then make an immediate right onto Mistletoe Drive/Laurance Road at the Chena Lake Recreation Area sign (The name of the road changes after about a mile/km). Turn left after 4.7 miles/7.5 km into Chena Lake Recreation Area. Drive 0.8 mile/1.3 km to the boat launch parking area. If you’re there to photograph the northern lights (after sundown) there’s ample room to park near the boat launch. During daytime, there’s room for 4 or 5 vehicles. Picnic tables nearby. Free Toilets.
