Argentina Moconá Waterfalls (Saltos del Moconá)
Moconá is the longest known longitudinal waterfall in the world, Gran Salto Moconá or Saltos del Moconá. The riverbed of the Rio Uruguay, which marks the border between Argentina and Brazil here, runs for three kilometres along the edge of a gorge. At high water, the waterfall does not exist. The less water the river carries, the more the impression of many parallel falls is created.
Travel Information
To see this unique natural spectacle, you have to book a trip on one of the inflatable boats that are used for this purpose here. The booking office is in the visitor centre of the Parque Provincial Moconá. After buying the ticket you can rive down to the car park and walk about a hundred meters to the pier.
You get a life jacket put on before boarding the boat. Even a few hundred metres past the waterfall where the boats start, the river is still a violent white water. Accordingly, the boat ride at high speed is a "hell ride". Again and again waves crash left, right and in front against the hull of the boat, tossing it back and forth, up and down.
Provincial road 2 to the Parque Provincial Moconá is a dead end. Road 21, leading through and out of the Reserva de Biósfera Yabotí, is only a rudimentary dirt road / jungle track.
To get out of the reserve you have to drive back road 2 to El Soberbio.
