Argentina Penguin Colony in Monte León National Park
Approaching the view point at the end of the path, penguin breeding burrows are close to the way. From vantage point the view goes to the left to the "Lion's Head". To the right, the sea glows in various shades of turquoise. Below, Magellan penguins cavort on the beach.
Travel Information
This park, south of Comandante Luis Piedra Buena, protects typical Patagonian steppe, canyons and an impressive part of the Atlantic coast. It is also the habitat of pumas.
Mountain lion, León de Montaña, is also the name given to the puma in Argentina. A rock formation by the sea that resembles a lion's head gives the Monte León National Park its name.
A gravel road runs from Routa Ncional 3 through the park. From a parking lot at this road, a path two and a half kilometres each way leads through somewhat rough terrain. In addition, there is the typical stiff wind of Patagonia, including swirling dust. This can make the hike an extreme effort. Signs warn not to walk this trail alone; the park's namesake might mistake the lone hiker for prey.
