A mosque was constructed at Hergott Springs in 1862 by camel breeder Abdul Kadir for members of the South Australian Afghan community. Today nothing remains apart from some stumps. The "Afghans" were generally Muslims from then-British India, although some came from Afghanistan and the Middle East. They worked as camel drivers and breeders in the region. This structure is believed to be a replica built in the town of Maree.

It is best to drive to Marree but it is a long day's drive from Adelaide, about 670 km and best done over two days. It is possible to charter a flight but being without a car in this area would be very limiting.
