Belgium Middelheim Castle
The first mention of the Middelheim castle, owned by the Carthusians, dates from 1342. The current castle, surrounded by water, and park was rebuilt in Louis XIV style in the second half of the 18th century and had several owners.
From 1820 to 1842, Knight E. Parthon de Von was the owner of the castle, an ardent plant lover who furnished Middelheim with greenhouses and an orangery.
The city of Antwerp bought the property in 1910 from the Le Grelle family, owners from 1842 to 1909.
The Middelheim Park, badly damaged during the Second World War, was restored and opened in 1950 as an "Open Air Museum of Sculpture" with a permanent exhibition of numerous sculptures by national and international artists.
