Belgium Gravenhof Castle
Gravenhof Castle was once the country house of wealthy Antwerpers. Louis Van den Abeele bought the domain in 1868 for his daughter Louise and her husband Emiel de Harven, a wool merchant in Antwerp. De Harven built a country house there and created a meeting place for artists and intellectuals. In 1878, de Harven sold the then 8-hectare Gravenhof.
A school for girls was located there until 1886.
The present Gravenhof castle was not built until 1897. The original castle was then demolished.
The new building and surrounding park were purchased by Umicore, then the Silver Factory, for its director.
The Hoboken city council bought the building in 1978. It first served as a police building until it burned down almost completely due to a fire bomb. The building then stood empty for a long time and fell into disrepair.
Since 2015 it has been in use again as the Gravenhof youth and cultural centre.
