Belgium Royal Museum of Fine Arts
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts (Dutch: Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten) is an art museum in Antwerp. The current monumental building on the Leopold De Waelplaats was built between 1884 and 1890 to designs by Jan Jacob Winders and Frans Van Dijk and was opened on August 11, 1890. The collection of 7600 paintings shows the artistic developments in Antwerp, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Scheldt city was one of the most important art centers in Europe.
In 2011, the museum closed its doors for a complete restoration and expansion. A large internal depot was built, as well as a new vertical building that significantly increased the museum's volume. The splendor and magnificence of the historic halls have been restored to their former glory. Friezes, busts, bust paintings, medallions and other sculptures in the museum were given a makeover. A new, state-of-the-art air-conditioning system has been installed. A brand new museum garden was created. The scenography was completely redesigned. In the end, this tour de force took 11 years. But the result is more than impressive.
The museum was closed for renovation work from 2011 to 2022. It was reopened on September 24, 2022.
