Canada Salt Plains, Wood Buffalo National Park
In the northeast of Wood Buffalo National Park salt plains extend over an area of 370 square kilometers. The scenery is bizarre. It is in fact common salt (NaCl), which here with the groundwater comes to the earth's surface and crystallizes. On slightly higher vegetation islands, spruce are still growing with difficulty. Otherwise, the white areas are only interrupted by areas with salt-tolerant and salt-resistant plants.
Travel Information
About 30 km west of Fort Smith, a gravel road leads from the highway to a lookout over part of the plains. After a short descent you are in the middle of the salt.
