Canada Slave River Rapids

Near Fort Smith, a few kilometers beyond Wood Buffalo National Park, the mighty Slave River has to cross several rocky passages on its way to the Great Slave Lake. With the power of its water masses it produces huge rapids. Nearly 500 White Pelicans, who spend the winter in the Gulf of Mexico, fly here every year and form the northernmost colony of their kind in North America. They swim, sail and fish elegantly in the rapids.

From the dirt road, you have to hike through the forest and along the rocky river bank.
