Chile Geysers de el Tatio

  • Please log in or sign up for free to see the GPS coordinates & weather for this photo spot
With nearly 80 active geysers, El Tatio is the largest geyser site in the southern hemisphere3, and the third largest in size after Yellowstone National Park in the United States and the geyser valley in Russia.

Photography Tips

Early in the morning.

Not only before and at sunrise, but also later in the morning, the geysers of El Tatio are absolutely worth seeing. Those who leave this vast, spectacular geyser field at 9 am, as most tourist buses do, have missed wonderful impressions. Less enveloped in steam, large, deep pots of hot water, the boiling fountains and structures are more visible. Sinter formations, including colourful, filigree terraces, shine in the sunlight.

Travel Information

By car or tourist bus.

The road, almost 100 km north of San Pedro de Atacama, is only decent on a few short sections and otherwise rough. In the early morning dark, it is even worse than in the light.
