The Atacama Desert, located in northern Chile, is one of the driest places on Earth, with some areas receiving no rain for centuries. Known for its vast salt flats, unique landscapes like the Valle de la Luna, and rich astronomical significance, the desert is a prime location for stargazing and research. Despite its harsh environment, it supports diverse life, including hardy plants, llamas, and flamingos. The Atacama also has cultural importance, with ancient indigenous sites, and is a major source of minerals like copper and lithium. Its extreme dryness, however, raises concerns about water scarcity and environmental impact. About 12 km from San Pedro de Atacama lies the "Valley of the Moon", part of the salt cordillera (Cordillera de la Sal).
