About 60 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, west of the Cordillera de la Sal is the location of the Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache, seven salt water ponds of different sizes.
The highly concentrated salt water shines light blue, turquoise and green in the sun. The white salt crust, partly as a mighty wall in the water, brings out the colours particularly well.
At first you see what appears to be a very roughly ploughed field. But at second glance you see that such unsystematic ploughing would not be possible at all. Here, salt water has obviously soaked the soil and created bizarre shapes as it dried out. The lagoons are embedded in this landscape, accessible via boardwalks.
Bathing is allowed in the first lagoon. A young woman was brave and stepped in. She demonstrated that you don't sink in the salt water even with your legs loosely stretched out in the air. The other lagoons are simply beautiful and more and more beautiful.

Travel Information

46 of the 60 kilometres are one of the worst gravel roads I know. However, the salt lagoons compensate for the strenuous drive.
There are two parking lots at both ends of theboardwalks along the lagoons.
