China Shilin Stone Forest, Yunnan
The Chinese province of Yunnan shares much of its border and geology with neighbouring Vietnam. The Shilin Stone Forest is the tourist label for unusual concentration of limestone karst formations that have been carefully curated into a geological theme park. The thin spires and blades of rock create a dense labyrinth of surreal and otherworldly textures.
Photography Tips
The main area is heavy with tourists from about 10am onwards until closing time but you don’t have to wander too far away from the main park area to get a glimpse of how the area must have appeared in a wilder state.
Travel Information
Most major Chinese airports offer flights to Kunming. From Kunming, Shilin is accessible by vehicle, chartered driver (recommended) or tour bus (for those with the stomach for it).
