Croatia Plitvice Lakes as seen on postcards

This is one of the most famous views of the Plitvice Lakes National Park as it is used for several postcard motives. It is located north of the lower lakes behind the great waterfall Veliki Slap. It's a bit tricky to get there, since you usually walk along the shores of the lake down in the chasm. However, for photographers it is definitely worth the detour. Especially, if the weather is better than when we visited ;-)

Photography Tips

It's an easy shot. It might be helpful to be there later in the afternoon to avoid frontlighting of the midday sun since you shoot straight to the south.

Travel Information

It could be quite easy to get there even from the tourist path around the lower lakes below, but as we visited the national park the stairs up from the pond, in which the great waterfall (Veliki Slap -
right at the very end of the footpath) drops down, was closed. So you can take your chance and walk along the shores of the lower lakes to the great waterfall and then circumvent the barrier to climb up the stairs to the left (be careful!). On top of the cliff find the road and turn right.
If you want to make sure to get there (without using blocked paths and slippery stairs), you need to decide early and avoid the footpath below along the lower lakes. Follow the footpath to the north right from the junction of the lower and upper lakes where the Kozjačka Draga restaurant is located and walk up through the woods toward the cliffs and the high road - the footpath will eventually hit the road to Plitvica Selo. You will get awarded with several great views from above (there are some small footpaths from the road to view points above the lower lakes - check out my other location tipp for Plitvice Lakes). Either way, you will want to reach the spot where you can see the great waterfall (Veliki Slap) from above. Follow the road over the small bridge. After the bridge turn right on the small and narrow footpath through the woods. It's easy to find. After a short walk turn right towards the view point from which this photo was taken.

It's even better when the weather is nice. ;-) That very day it was cloudy and foggy all the time. Anyway, this place (the whole park) is sort of magical. Especially in Fall when it's not so crowded and the colors are vibrant. Even if the weather is dull, the fairytale-like atmosphere is compelling.

Yeah, that's true. I've been there during the end of summer, so it was still quite crowded, even if the main season was just over. Autumn would definitely be a season when I would love to come back to this amazing place.
