France Roussillon
Roussillon is a municipality of Département Vaucluse, Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and is part of the regional natural reserve of Luberon. It has been classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France (most beautiful villages of France).
Roussillon is famous for it’s ochreous soil underneath and around the village mined here since roman times and used for the production of colours until 1930. Today only one colour plant has left open for visitation (Ancienne Usine Mathieu). The warm-red-ocherous colour is dominating the whole village.
The Sentier des ocres of Roussillon is a studies path through the giant Ocre quarries, formed by mining and erosion, situated at the outskirts of Roussillon . From the viewing platform at Sentier des Ocres you have a very nice view over Roussillon.
