Germany Köln-Ehrenfeld
Today's lighthouse replaced a first, less representative test and demonstration system for beacons three years after the factory went into operation. Its 12-meter-high base building, built in the historicist style, has a square floor plan and was placed on the northwest corner of the large workshop. It originally bore a large inscription with the company name "Helios Elektricitäts Akt. Ges.". The actual red brick tower stands on it. It is round and tapers upwards. The shaft carries a platform that overhangs on consoles, on which there was a pilot beacon until the Second World War. In 1996 the lamp house was restored with an iron / glass construction based on the original and equipped with glare-free permanent lighting, but without any optics. An iron tip serves as a lightning rod. In today's road layout, the tower stands on Heliosstrasse, which limits the former Helios site to the northwest. The tower has been a listed building since 1986.
Photography Tips
The Heliosturm can be seen quite well from the Cologne-Ehrenfeld train station, and Heliosstr. to go along. There you will find a lot of grafittis and - if you are lucky - also cosplay models that you can take pictures of if you have any questions.
Travel Information
To Heliosstr. You can get to the Ehrenfeld station by train or subway to the Veloer Str./Gürtel stop. From there you can already see the Helios Tower.
