Germany Halde Rungenberg
The Rungenberg slag heap served as a waste dump for the Hugo coal mine in Gelsenkirchen, which was closed in 1997. The night sign, a landmark visible from afar, was installed on the 110 m high heap. Two light cannons were mounted on the two flanks of an unfinished pyramid, illuminating the pyramid's apex against Gelsenkirchen's night sky. The night sign is switched on after sunset, approximately 30 minutes after the streetlights, and remains illuminated until midnight. The Rungenberg slag heap is one of the burning heaps. Vegetation remains sparse. Numerous paths around the pyramid invite you to take a stroll.
Photography Tips
Best time of the year is winter. Chose a wet and foggy day so that the light beams are visible in the sky.
