Germany Schurenbachhalde
At 100 m long and 50 m wide, the Schurenbach Halde is one of the largest slag heaps in the Ruhr region. It owes its name to a small river over which it was built. At the top of the slag heap, which is bare of vegetation, is the "Bramme für das Ruhrgebiet," a rectangular piece of steel, 15 m high, 4 m wide, and just over 10 cm thick. This work of art by the American artist Richard Serra was erected in 1998. Ironically, the steel was cast and rolled in France, as at that time there was no longer a steelworks in the Ruhr region capable of producing steel of this size.
