Germany Zeche Zollverein, Schacht 12
The Zollverein coal mine in Essen operated from 1851 to 1986. Shaft 12, sunk in 1929 and operational by 1932, was one of the most modern and efficient mining facilities worldwide. With a daily output of up to 12,000 tons of coal, the site set standards for efficiency and architecture in the New Objectivity style. The iconic double-strut headframe of Shaft 12 became the mine's symbol. After its closure in 1986, the facility was designated a historic monument and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Today, Shaft 12 serves as a cultural hub and houses the Ruhr Museum.
