Germany Zeche Nordstern, Schacht 1/2
The Nordstern mine was established in 1866 and was the northernmost coal mine in the Ruhr area. Shaft 1 was sunk in 1858 and began production in 1868, featuring a distinctive Malakow tower that defined the site. Shaft 2 followed between 1890 and 1892, starting operations in 1894. In the 1950s, Shaft 2 was modernized with a closed headframe in 1953, which is now a protected monument. Both shafts were central production facilities for the Nordstern mine, which produced up to 1.9 million tons of coal annually. After its closure in 1986, the surface facilities of Shafts 1 and 2 were preserved and are now part of the Nordsternpark, serving as a cultural and recreational venue.
