Greece Vóthonas
Santorini is extensively covered by a thick pumice-tuff layer, volcanic ash. On the one hand, this tuff is light and soft, so you can practically dig in it with your hands. On the other hand, it is so strong that cavities dug in it can be used as living spaces. The apartments created in this way are very well insulated and earthquake-proof.
Some particularly impressive examples are on the flanks of the volcano. Rainwater has washed erosion valleys out of the tuff here. To the left and right of the flow direction, individual houses, churches, chapels or entire villages were built into the tuff walls. A nice example is the village of Vóthonas.
