At the road Landmannaleið west of Landmannalaugar a signpost points to an obviously little driven side road to “Valagjá“. “Val“ is Icelandic for “Ejection“, “Gjá“ is gorge.More appropriately than “Ejection gorge“ one cannot call this black-violet-red-yellow hell’s abyss.
It is probably one of the most easily accessible volcanic crater rims in Iceland.

Travel Information

Though this gravel road is little used it is fine to drive, especially for four wheel drives, the only vehicles allowed in the Iclandic highlands. You can drive all the way to the crater rim.
