Iceland Gluggafoss
A 44-metres tall waterfall in South Iceland. It is actually a series of waterfalls running in the small river Merkjá and together these waterfalls are called Merkjárfoss Falls. The name is derived from “gluggar” or “windows” because the river has created several holes and tunnels in the soft bedrock where you can see the water flowing before fully emerging as a waterfall and cascades.
Photography Tips
Be prepared for mist from the waterfall, particularly on windy days. With some difficulty, it’s possible to make your way behind the falls but you’ll get drenched in the process. Not worth the effort in my opinion. There are ample photo compositions without getting wet.
Travel Information
From the Urriddafoss parking area, drive northeast for .6 mile (about 1 km) to route 1. Turn right and drive 11 miles (18 km). At the roundabout, take the 2nd right to stay on Route 1. Drive 8 miles (13 km), then turn left on Route 261 (Hlidarvegur, which quickly changes to Fljótshlivardegur) and drive 11 miles (18 km). Turn left at Gluggafossavegur and drive .2 mile (.3 km) to the parking area. A short hike from the parking lot takes you straight up to the waterfall.
