Heidelberg is a big city in the south-west of Germany, known for the castle, the university and the beautiful old town. The population is around 150.000 with almost a quarter being students, which is quite a lot for a relatively big city like this.

Especially the river Neckar and the hills in the eastern part of the city offer great opportunities for photographers. One of the most popular spots is Heidelberg Castle, which is a great choice for sunset photos because of it's positioning to the east, offering a great view to the west over the city of Heidelberg.

The old bridge over the river is also a popular theme you might want to use for your photos. The riverside offers a great view towards the bridge with the church and the baroque stlye old town in the background.

Travel tips for Heidelberg

The best way to visit Heidelberg is by train or by car. Big cities like Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn or even Frankfurt am Main are also not that far away if you plan to visit the region for a few more days. In general Heidelberg is a great visit for a weekend trip or a stay for a few days to enjoy the old town, the castle and the area around the river Neckar.
