Tips for your trip to Moraine Lake

About the location

The popularity for this place has multiplied during the last years, especially for photographers because of the extremely beautiful lake view towards the mountains in the background. The best timing is probably during sunrise when the first rays will illuminate the top parts of the mountains in beautiful red and orange colors.

The area is beautiful without any doubt, just keep in mind that it's very touristic these days, especially during the day. The lake looks so peaceful on most of the images, but there is a quite huge parking area and lots of tourists are visiting this place after they have been at Lake Louise. Visiting Moraine Lake is a must-see if you are at Banff, but it's quite important to hit the right timing, because visiting it at a touristic day might destroy your imagination from that lonely and untouched lake in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

Traveling

There is a big parking area just in front of Moraine Lake and there are also driving buses up to this place, starting at Lake Louise. It takes around 10 - 15 minutes by car to get there from Lake Louise, which is directly at the Trans-Canada Highway. During the daytime it's often possible, that you won't get any parking spot. If the weather is good and there are lost of tourists, you might want to come back in the evening or early morning hours. Another alternative is to leave your car at Lake Louise Overflow parking. There are free buses starting at this parking area, that are driving around between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.
