Il Tempio di Sulamani fu costruito nel 1183 dal re Narapatisithu (r. 1174 - 1211). Bagan, anticamente pagana, fu costruito principalmente tra l'XI e il XIII secolo. Formalmente intitolata Ariaddanapura o Arimadana (la città del frantumatore nemico) e conosciuta anche come Tambadipa (la terra del rame) o Tassadessa (la terra arida), era la capitale di diversi antichi regni in Birmania.
