Netherlands Bergkerk Church in Deventer
The St. Nicholas or Bergkerk in Deventer is originally a Roman basilica and is located on an old river dune in the Bergkwartier. The church was built in the years 1198-1209, near the then Deventer harbor quarter. It was founded in the heyday of the Hanseatic city. The church, a Romanesque basilica, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the captains. In the 15th century the Bergkerk underwent several renovations which gave it a late Gothic character. The two characteristic spiers were built during that period (the lower part of the towers is still original).
