The Red Stone square is the most prominent one in Hoorn, a beautiful tranquil pictoresque town in the province of North Holland. It is an intersection of six streets and alleys from inland merging together. The name Roode Steen (Red Stone) is derived from its middle ages bloody history where people who had been sentenced by the municipal court of aldermen had their limbs chopped off or in the capital crimes of the head. It all happend on the Red Stone in the square right infront of the Town Hall. The Red Stone in the square is a replica but fragments of the original stone can be found in the Westfries Museum on the square.
The square is also known as the "Kaasmarkt" (the Cheese Market) which was the biggest in the country in the 19th century.
