Netherlands Paard van Marken
The lighthouse ‘Paard van Marken’ (Horse of Marken, somehow resembling a horse in its current shape) was built in 1839 by J. Valk. A primitive tower had been on the location since the early 18th century; the current lighthouse is declared a national monument in 1970. The tower is 16 meters tall and has a light range of 16,7 Km. Every night its light shines over the IJsselmeer. Nowadays it functions for the inland shipping and for personal boats.
The lighthouse the the most iconic and probably the most photographed lighthouse in the Netherlands. It is situated at the eastern end of the Marken penninsula on the Markermeer (hence its attractivenes at sunrise) and is accessible on foot (about a good 20/25 minutes walk from the village) or by bycicle. The road is staight and flat but the scenery is Dutch landscape at its best.
