The old architecture of Amsterdam is amazing. Especially for architecture photographers the city is a paradise. The house facades at Damrak are just one highlight, since the canal offers the opportunity for nice reflections.

Photography Tips

Amsterdam is a great city for night photography with long exposure. If you are economising on lenses for a trip to Amsterdam, go for wide-angle: 16-35 mm will give you a surprising number of shots because usually you're almost always close to the architecture. Don't forget your tripod (yes, you can take them as cabin luggage, as long as you don't exceed the length requirement).

Wander around this spot; there are shots to be taken up near the Grasshopper too, e.g. looking back at the central station.

Travel Information

Amsterdam is very problematic with car. Best way to get around is by bus or by train. A lot of the beautiful places can also easily reached by foot when you get to the center by public transportation. The parking garages are quite expensive, but if you don't care about that going there by car is also a valid option.

What have been your specs on this or what lens did you take? ISO, xx mm? Maximum f and HDR?

Just looked at some of mine... I wanted to smooth out water surface, people etc, without an ND filter, so 30 seconds, F16 and I raised the ISO to 250 so I could use the other settings.
