You should aim for a symmetrical composition. ND-filters and long exposures are the perfect weapon to get rid of people who are walking by. The scenery gets even more interesting when you're shooting in the evening hours with all the lights in the windows and maybe some cartrails in the foreground.
Make sure to disable the (auto) upright function in post production!

Parking is always a problem in Amsterdam, but the central train station is nearby.
