New Zealand Welshtown, Bedigo miners village

Welshtown is now just the ruins of 3-4 stone buildings from the goldrush days. Interesting site with views out over Lake Dunstan and Wanaka.

There are over 50 old mine shafts in the area, so don't stray from the paths or step over barriers.

Photography Tips

Evening light can add a special touch to the images. Watch out for rabbit shooters if you are there too late.

Worth the effort to get there is the light ad sky is interesting. Find a vineyard if the light is dull.

Travel Information

The entrance to the Bendigo Historic Reserve is on the Bendigo Loop Road, about 20km from Cromwell on SH8. It's a step, dirt road best suited to 4WD vehicles. It is normally well maintained enough for a normal car to make it but I wouldn't take a camper up there.
