New Zealand Akaroa
Akaroa was originally French but the British raised their flag here just before a larger contingent of French colonists arrived. The colonist's persistence is evidenced in the French street names that are evident throughout the town.
Today, it's mainly a tourist destination, with weekend homes and holiday accommodation dominating. Boats take tourists out to view the area and dolphins from the water. There are restaurants along the waterfront but they close fairly early in the evening.
