New Zealand Tongaporutu Beach
The coast at Tongaporutu is spectacular with sea stacks, rocky coast, black sandy beach and ball-shaped boulders.
Travel Information
From a parking lot at the Tongaporutu River, it's only at low tide on foot in the riverbed, which is lined here by a 30 m high bluff. After a few hundred meters the dark beach is reached, which at high tide is deep underwater.
As inviting as the beach is, so dangerous is the stay there. When the tide sets in, the partly deeper riverbed runs full and the way back is cut off!
