The vegetation in this area is unusual in New Zealand bat thousands of years ago, like here, whole tracts of land should have looked.
The low so-called 'Bog Pines' and the beige moss carpet spread underneath them are vegetation forms that have survived ten thousand years and more. Therefore the area marked 'Wilderness Scientific Reserve' is protected.
