The southern tip of the Pasvik valley is protected as Øvre Pasvik National Park. The virgin forest here, consisting of coniferous woods, birch, heather, lakes and swamps, is the northwestern corner of the Siberian taiga. The three neighbouring countries Norway, Finland and Russia have established here a transboundary reserve. This area is very secluded and there is a strong brown bear population as well as wolverines and wolves.
