The Hinterrhein (Back Rhine) flows here at about 1,100 m altitude through the Roffla Gorge on the estate of an inn of the same name.
In the early 19th century, roads were built in the Hinterrhein area. However, the opportunities to earn a living through the trade broke off by the opening of the Gotthard tunnel in 1882. The operators of the inn emigrated to America. From the experience of the marketing of the Niagara Falls, the idea arose to make the Roffla Gorge accessible. After returning home during the winter months from 1907 to 1914, the innkeeper chiseled, drilled and blew up a gallery from the rock face to the waterfall and underneath it. So one can go behind the fall.
Today, the Hinterrhein leads significantly less water, because power plants remove water. Nevertheless, the gorge is spectacular and the waterfall is worth seeing.
