United Kingdom Canary Wharf Underground, London

One of the most modern-looking Underground stations in London with a pretty futuristic and clean look.
Canary Wharf station, designed by British architect Norman Foster, is the second busiest on the London Underground outside Central London after Stratford and has over 40 million users every year. The architecture provides many photographic opportunities.

The first of the "behind the scene" shots at night were filed in error; is an "above the scene". It shows the distinctive canopy to the escalator exit, but it's the one from the other end of the hall, taken from my desk at the time. Zooming above it, you can see the Gherkin and Cheese Grater. The scene has now gone - the cranes have been replaced by another high-rise apartment block.

Photography Tips

You should go there late in the evening when there are fewer people using this station to get a people-free photo. Tripods are not allowed inside the station, but this spot is one floor beyond the main floor, so there are usually no watchmen.

Travel Information

You can get there by the London Underground (Jubilee Line) for obvious reasons, but you have to leave the Underground to get to this spot, so you will have to pay again to reenter it. If you aren't there by tube, you can enter this part of the station for free by using the eastern entrance.

Very nicely symmetrical. The cold color design reflects the real impression of this metro station very well. Greeting Herbert

Thank you very much, dear Herbert :-) Quick note: When you comment the spot, it's very hard to understand which photo you mean which is also the reason why the photos have their own comments.

Understood. I'll think about it next time and will use the button under the picture for it.

If you want Niko to read your comment it's always better to comment the photo itself instead of the entire spot because then he will get notified about it and it's clear that the comment is just about this one photo... just as a little hint... :-) Have a great Sunday and sunny greetings from the Rhineland! (it's much too hot here right now)

Haha, that's awesome and often the best part about photography, if you get the chance to open someones eyes for the beauty of something. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us, that's extremely helpful for others as well.

I tried this shot the other night at about 5:20 and it doesn't work anywhere near as well. Late at night on a weekend seems to be the trick.

Hmmm, to be honest, I don't understand your behind the scenes photos...? The feature is meant for photos from "behind the scenes", which would be in this case the place in front of the moving staircase so that you can see how much space you have for the tripod etc.

Argh! Misunderstood that - the intent was to show the scene from the other side of the canopy - not the same thing at all. And to make things worse, the canopy isn't that one; its the one from the other end of the hall. I'll take these down and perhaps find a more appropriate home. Sorry. How do I remove them? Can't see the little cog. (like being able to see when the shots were taken, BTW)
